Traditional Mexican rag doll aka ‘Maria’

These gorgeous smiling Marias, with moveable arms and legs, are handcrafted by women’s groups using recycled Indigenous clothing.

It has been suggested that these dolls originated when Guadalupe Rivera, daughter of muralist Diego Rivera, started a program designed to help the local women, who had been limited to selling candy on the street in cities. We don’t know if this is factual but we do love this story.
